Accidents

When a patient suffers from spinal dislocation, the history of the accident has to be clear. Also he is checked for any signs of paralysis. The physical examination will start with the stabilization of the patient (his airways, blood pressure ).

After this the spine has to be palpated in order to discover possible abnormalities.

A neurologic examination is also needed and it may include the patient’s reflexes and the sensory test to stimuli. A very important thing is the way the patient is moved and positioned. It is preferred to move the patient as little as possible and to put him on a lateral position . In the majority of situations, surgery is required for reduction.

Surgery is avoided if the patient has heart conditions or if he takes anticoagulants.

Before deciding what is the diagnose, a radiography for the lateral parts is needed in order to discover the fractures. In addition a CT scan can be performed also.

After the surgery, the artificial fiber can be detached after 2 weeks and rehabilitation can start. The patient will have to take some radiographs as a routine to control the union of the bones.

During and after this surgery, complications may appear. The patient should be carefully placed, with the arms gathered along the body, and pressure on the ulnar nerve has to be avoided. After the surgery, hematomas may appear and they will need aspiration in order to avoid infection. After the surgery is recommended to move the patient frequently to avoid skin problems. Also the patient will have to take some suppositories or other drugs in order to stabilize his digestive functions.

The result of the surgery can be easily influenced by the age of the patient, by his medical history, and by the way he copes with the situation. Depression and lack of motivation will affect the recovery. That’s why beside the physical recovery, the patient will need psychological assistance and family support.

People, especially young adults die from spinal injuries or they live with problems for the rest of their lives although science has discovered new ways of dealing with this dangerous situation.
