Post-Term Pregnancy

Every new mother what’s to see her baby as quickly as possible. Nine months is long enough for her and when the baby delays then she has a patience problem. But besides this what other real problems appear after the normal period of bearing a child ? Post-term pregnancy, a pregnancy that lasts more than 42 weeks.
Studies show that more than 7 % of babies are born after 42 weeks. But not all of the babies are really post-term because very often a miscalculation of the conception date occurs. In women who have a regulate period is not difficult to calculate, but in other cases, accurate dating is really a problem.

Anyway, if miscalculation is not the case, there are some factors that may lead to a post-term pregnancy. The risk is higher if this is the first pregnancy, or if the woman have had a previous one. In addition there are also some genetic factors that may pay a role in this situation.

Post- term pregnancy is not risk-free. Firstly, due to a large baby, mothers will have vaginal trauma at birth and they are likely to choose a cesarean . There are also risks for the baby. The placenta which supplies the fetus with oxygen and nutrients is possible to not function as good as before because she is aging. Though little there is a chance of decease for a post-term baby. There also is the risk of meconium aspiration. After the term the baby is prone to a bowel movement into the amiotic fluid and these can cause breathing problems when the baby is born .

Another risk for the baby is the fetal dysmaturity, when the growth of the baby is affected because of a problem with the placenta.

When a pregnancy is post- term the first thing that a doctor will do are tests on the baby. This is called antenatal fetal monitoring and it will start after 41 or 42 weeks. The baby’s activity will be observed with an ultrasound and also the baby’s heart rate will be tested. The observing of the heart rate will be no stressing, and it will consist in placing a small device on the mother’s abdomen for 30 minutes. Normally the rate should be between 110 and 160 beats. After this, a biophysical profile will be made. Here are present : fetal body movements, amniotic fluid volume breathing movements, fetal tone. They will be noted individually 2 points if normal and 0 points if not normal .

Is rather hard to establish when is the perfect time to deliver a baby . But if the cervix is dilated and the results of the antenatal fetal test is good, inducing labor is an option. Others may choose to have a cesarean delivery, especially if the baby is already too big.
