Sleep Disorders – Treatment

One of the most common clinical problems that a person could encounter in psychiatry and medicine are sleep disorders. They can be a result or a primary condition that could be triggered by a palette of medical and psychiatric conditions. Non-restorative or inadequate sleep can lead to various other disorders and will severely affect the patient’s life.

Endogenous disturbance in sleep patterns or poor timing in a sleeping program can result in a sleeping disorder. This also could complicate itself in creating new problems from behavioral conditions to physical illnesses. Primary sleep disorders will be categorized into dyssomnias and parasomnias.

Dyssomnias will be recognized due to the uneven patterns in quality, amount and timing of one’s sleep. This will include circadian rhythm sleep disorder, breathing related sleep disorder (sleep apnea), hypersomnia and primary insomnia.

When diagnosing a sleep disorder, a primary step would be to asses if it is primary or secondary. In some cases this will e difficult due to the fact that in many cases they can be a primary effect like depression or anxiety that could cause problems or it could be judged as a secondary symptom to a other underlining disease.

One of the most important sleep disorders that it is know all around the globe will be insomnia that is the general term in trying to maintain or in some cases to initiate sleep and because restorative sleep is very important for the well being of the human body, long periods of lack of sleep or poor quality of sleep will lead to some significant problems, depending on the individual.

There is no specific pattern that these types of disorders will have due to the fact that although it is recommended to have eight hours of sleep per night, some individuals find that they will need more to feel energetic the other day or in other cases they will require less time to have that good night’s sleep.

When discussing treatment, the very first step would be to recognize the underlining condition and if it will be primary or secondary to another illness. The patient must be evaluated, taken under medical and psychiatric tests and bolded out considering his or hers life style.

Every doctor will try and teach or describe some basic sleep hygiene and in some cases, if the patient is under some medication, it will be switched. The basic center of any treatment will be this type of education because not every patient knows what are the basic requirements in having a good night sleep like using the bedroom only for sleep and not working in it or avoiding any caffeine intake prior going to sleep.

Exercising every day also will lead to a much healthier body and a build up of exhaustion that will make a patient in need of normal sleep patterns. In other more complicated disorders the medic will asses and prescribe some drugs that will surely do the trick.
