The most common symptoms of cataract are : the colors are not seen as they should be, they are perceived paler, the inability to read and watch television because of a decreased vision at distance or near, decreased night vision, especially when driving, objects perceived as duplicate, intolerance or abnormal fear of light, fixed black dots in the visual field.

Senile cataract may have a lot of causes and reasons to appear. Among them are: radiation, long exposure to ultraviolet exposure, electric –shock. Even the use of microwave can cause cataract. It can appear as a side effect of some drugs like Ezetimibe or Corticosteroids.

Family history or genetic factors may also be written in the list of factors that may produce cataract causing an anticipation in the senile cataract because persons will be exposed much early in life at this illness. Eye injuries are also a risk factor.

Studies have shown that pilots are more exposed in suffering from this condition because of the long period exposure to radiation above the earth. Also there are some illnesses that may lead to the appearance of cataract like : diabetes, Marfan syndrome, hyperlysinemia . In case of senile cataract the risk of losing the vision with one eye is high.

There is no treatment that can prevent or stop the growth of cataracts. Local treatment based on drops administration in the conjunctiva’s sac only leads to an improvement of symptoms. The most effective treatment for cataracts is surgery. Performing a surgery is the only way that leads to a significant improvement in vision.

Cataract surgery is the most common eye surgery, it has high success rates and does not require a long recovery time. During surgery, the natural lens is removed and replaced with an artificial one. When the lens is removed the doctor may want to remove the lens capsule too and this is the case of intra-capsular surgery, or to leave the lens capsule intact (Extra-capsular surgery). Administration of antioxidants and vitamins additional could play an important role in healing cataracts and even delay its installation.
